*Appearance: Continent Map: linkNational Emblem: linkNational Pokemon: Camerupt >> There are volcanoes scattered about the region of Montisma. Volcanoes are a greatly feared by everyone. However, the fear is not enough to drive the people away – just enough fear to be cautious and respectful of the turbulent mountain-like structure. This is how the government wants themselves to be viewed (in some respect), while they do want to seem like a protection source, they also want to be respectfully and cautiously feared. However, this is why Camerupt is the national pokemon. It has the fierceness of a volcano, yet the ability to protect. And it will protect with the rage of a thousand suns if provoked. This pokemon does not turn the other cheek, and neither does Montisma. *Geography: National Resources: - Coal (Anthracite+ Lignite), Oil/Petroleum (limited), Rocks (Volcanic/Igneous rocks [Granite, Obsidian, Pumice to name a few]), & Minerals (sulfur, copper, iron oxide, alkaline lead, calcium oxide, carbon, nickel, iron, and many more metal-like ores) >> volcano, mountain, and desert based natural resources for the most part. - Barley, onion, turnips, grapes, chickpeas, peas, lentils, and apples - spices (various including jasmine and paprika) >> in fertile soil only - Meats ( ekans, tauros, pidgey, mareep , stantler, miltank, taillow, starly, buneary, pidove, & deerling) >> the pokemon in italics are Montisman favourites and are much more abundant in the area.

* Government: Military Junta (and Montisman-controlled somewhat of a constitutional Monarchy in Fractis) >> Before the Republic of Montisma, Montisma was simply Montisma and Fractis was a separate entity of its own. The government of the old Montisma was Democracy (before that was Constitutional Monarchy and before that feudalism). However, the leader of the Montisman army, Ason Amar, grew discontent with the way the democracy was working. They felt it made the country weak. So Ason, his cronies (who later become members of the first Supreme Committee), and a majority of the Montisman army forcefully took over the country. While the Navy and Air Force tried to stop them, it was fruitless. The army was, and probably forever will be, the strongest point of Montisma. This occurred around 55 years ago. Since then, Committee members have come and gone though the Amar family has reigned in the spot of General Secretary. Back to the military take-over of Montisma. Ason Amar always hated Fractis and their peaceful, happy-go-lucky ways. Their religion – Linism [will be explained later] was the main source of his hatred. You see, Ason was beyond a non-theist… he was an atheist. And if there was such a thing as an evangelical atheist… Ason would be a poster-boy of that. He was also very persuasive in making his cronies (and others) think the same way. He also made the strong point that Fractis had a Fertile area that would provide more food staples for the area. The hatred of Ason’s spread like wildfire and with the same passionate fever. It was only a matter of time before the army (this time joined by the taken over navy and air force) charged into the suspecting, but unprepared, Fractis. The war lasted a mere 9 days before Fractis had no choice but to surrender. However, while Ason hated Fractis and its Linism (and perhaps jealous of their happiness), Ason was still human and made a deal with the Fractis Monarchy & Parliament. He said they could keep their government (somewhat. It was still monitored closely) as long as the practice of Linism (or any religion) was banned forever. The level-headed leaders agreed to this. While Linism was a huge part of Fractis, the leaders did not want their people too suffer and be bullied, etc., by the military leaders that would then control the area. However, when it came to the stability of The Rebublic of Montisma, it all came down to this – were the people happy? The answer would be “no”. This led to a huge movement by disgruntled Montsmans and Fractisians alike. This movement was simply called The Rebellion. The movement started small about 25 years ago, but it gradually has become larger and more turbulent. Nowadays, a civil war is brewing… it’s only a matter of time.

*Foreign Relations & Military: Foreign Relations: >> Very Poor. Montisma is very stand-offish. They want to be left alone. Period. They allow visitors. But visitors are heavily watched and special permission is needed. Mostly (not only) diplomats and politicians come and that’s it. Montisma isn’t exactly a vacation hot spot. Military: Army - "great" Navy - "poor" Air Force - "good"

*Economy: Human Development/Education: >> Infancy: Birth statistics: The mortality rate of babies varies depending the area one is born in. In Iteria (the capital), the rate is the lowest. In rural areas, it’s the highest. In rural areas, far from an hospital and where midwifes are used, the mortality rate has been known to be has high as 65%. In Iteria, it is around 10%, which is still rather high for a developed area. Death of infant could have been caused by many thing such as insufficient medical equipment for the birthing process, disease, premature birth, etc… To be blunt, Montisma is a sexist society. The birth of a healthy boy is celebrated much more often the girls (Fractisians are a less sexist). However, the babies are treated equally up until schooling age (starts at 2). If a baby has a disorder such as downs or even withdrawal symptoms (if their mom abused alcohol or drugs), the infants are taken from their parents and sent to institutions so they don’t mix with the general population (unless they mature to be healthy like in the case of “withdrawal” babies or premature babies). Montisma, in short, could very well be seen as a beyond elitist society…or at least they want to be seen as an elitist society. The Supreme Committee has no shame. However, if the parent is influential enough, they are allowed to keep their “unhealthy” child in a government-controlled manner. The taking care of and sustenance of babies is dependent on the parents/family of the baby (unless put up for adoption... in which the government takes over. All orphanages/adoption agencies are government-run. The quality of the orphanage depends on where it is and who’s in it. City is better than rural and baby ones are better than older children ones.) >> Childhood: Notes for education in primary school: Survival lessons are more emphasized in rural areas. And rural areas aren’t necessarily the best Math and English environments. Education is required for everyone. Male. Female. Urban. Rural. It’s the outcome of education that differs. Males are mostly prepared for military/government-run jobs. While females do most of the other stuff. Later on, Females are often forced to retired much earlier than men. And retired military/government people take over their jobs sometimes. Cities tend to have year-round school with more interval breaks while rural areas tend to have long summer breaks for working purposes. (e.g. farm work) Ages 1-2: Children are allowed to play with each other and interact in a friendly, social manner..or as friendly and social as a child so young can be. Age 2: Schooling begins [pre-school] This is when children start learning their A-B-Cs, 1-2-3s, and learn the names all the existing pokemon and what they look like. Ages 3-4: Primary School begins. Preschool lessons are expanded even further. Ages 4-6: Still Primary school. First Survival lessons are taught (what to do in deserts, etcs.). More math, English, and pokemon lessons. Ages 6-12: More Primary School up to the end of Primary School. Students should be able to speak, -read, write, know their pokemon back and front, and be able to survive in the wilderness for at least a short while. They are also taught how great the government is. How it should be trusted…and how it is “Supreme” and “awe-inspiring”. The government of Montisma literally rewrote history and is teaching it to their young. Coveted, hidden, more Fractisian schools have been known to teach more un-biased..or even anti-government..this is where the main rebels were born. Also, some were also created via discontent and suspicion in the big Montisman cities. >> Adolescence: Ages 13-16: Secondary School. This is where Montsiman kids start training and getting ready for their pokemon handler license. They go even more depth into each and every pokemon…and the jobs and uses for all the pokmeon. This is were kids begin to decide what they want to do with their life…many many men join the army, air force, or navy. Others become electricians, construction workers, etc… While Montisma is a sexist nation, it still allows woman in most jobs besides the military and government..since the government and military take most of the boys away. Age 16: This is the age where boys apply to the military. They are either accepted (and go into one of the three sub-sections depending on their scores) or rejected. (There has been rumors in current times that some extremely patriotic women masquerade as men and fake their way into the military. But so far it has proven to be a myth…most likely it’s a myth at least) Note: Military has a don’t ask, definitely don’t tell policy. Homosexuality is looked down upon by the prudish/prejudice Committee. If one was to be found out as gay, they would be ousted from the government/military and be looked upon with shame by their family (most likely). Homosexuals have the easiest time leaving Montisma though (which is hard to do because of the restrictions in entering and leaving Montisma)..in search for a place where they are most accepted. [Special Note by Ronster: I have no qualms with homosexuals/bisexuals/transgenders/etc. I’m all for equal rights <3 The previous statements are based on other country’s pov and not my own] Note 2: Age 16 is the voting age (for men and women) for the Fractisian Parliamentary. Only those who were born in the Fractis area are allowed to vote. Or those who have consistently lived in the area for over ten years (and are of age). Ages 16-18: This is when all young boys and girls become men and woman. They have chosen their paths – career. This is also the ages when most people get their pokemon handling license. There are some who get it when older. Never younger. >> Adulthood: Ages 18-26: This is when young families are born. People get married. Women have kids. Etc, etc… Women usually juggle their work and taking care of kids (if they have any) while men are often at work. However, single women having a job as a nanny is common if necessary. Women can’t hold government positions and can’t join the military. Most doctors (and nurses, of course though not to be confused with doctors) are woman though..granted it’s not the government run hospitals in the capital or military bases. Same with attorneys. There are sooo many soldiers and government workers, pretty much all other jobs that doesn’t even strength and bulkiness are done by women. There is no such thing as homelessness unless a person chooses that lifestyle. (too much land, not enough people) However, there is such a thing as being dirt poor with very little food (but with a roof over one’s head). Unemployment is also very low (since there’s no worry about immigrants for the worst part). Having a purpose in life has proven to help against the growing discontent with the government and the way government treats people. This will not stop the upcoming civil war.

*Transportation: >> Mostly pokemon and bicycles. Cars and Public transportation is limited to large cities (and military bases). And even then it’s more common people ride bikes. Riding Pokemon is most common in rural areas. You’d think this would help the air. Ha! Pollution is high with the steel and ore mills…and the tons and tons of factories. Fun fact: highly trained onixes are sometimes used as makeshift mass transit in rural areas. They can carry the equivalent of a large van (6 people plus)

*Industry: >> Exports: See Natural Resources; Weaponry (mostly handguns and rifles). Artisan-made weapons such as swords, knifes, etc..are also popular for their manufacture goes back to pre-Republic/military junta days and have tons of fancy details. This is one of the few remnants of the past, citizens are allowed to be proud of (since it brings the republic money, hurrr). They also are a big import of jasmine and paprika…and already blended curries. Montisma (and Fractis) is (are) known for their spicy food. There is a rumor that Montisma exports missiles and other fancier weapons (namely, explosives and machine guns), but this may or may not be true. The government denies it profusely.

*Language: The native tongue is a dead language and is forbidden for public use. It is merely studied and spoken between professional linguists. [ Ronster note: I’m not making up this language... not enough time.] English is pretty much the only (official) language of this continent.

*Religion: >> Montisma is officially an atheistic country. The public practice of religion is banned and the government has been known to terrorize people who have publicly displayed their religious beliefs. There is a disbelief in the afterlife that many of the government officials and The Committee have and this results in a fear of death..thus, they are defensive and aggressive towards anyone who wants to take their life. They force this fear in their young along with a sense of patriotism…this fear of death weeds out weak soldiers…and this fear of death/aggressions mixed with patriotism creates super soldiers in a sense. There is, however, a religious background to Montisma though The Supreme Committee (namely, Jakub Amar, the General Secretary) is trying to “erase” it. The old religion of Montisma was called Ignism. It was basically the reverence of ancient fire spirits that supposedly lurked in the many volcanoes of Montisma. Fire Pokemon were also strongly revered as well. Now it has been decreed to treat fire pokemon just as they would any other (allowed) pokemon. Even the national pokemon. Camerupt, was said to be respected rather than revered. >> Fractis has even a strong background of a religion called Linism. This was the worship of the 4 “elite” pokemon. – the fabled Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, & Keldeo. Cobalion was seen to be the prestigious leader of the group and was worshipped the most. Terrkion was a close second. This was probably due to the many ore/metal mines around the area. This practice of worship has been banned by the Supreme Committee in return for Fractis being able to retain its Constitutional Monarchy …even if it’s a closely watched constitutional Monarchy. All over the Republic of Montisma (including the Fractis area), there has been numerous reports of public display of religion. So while religion has been banned per se, this by no means makes it gone for good. There is a lot of terrorizing by the government due to it though.

*Customs: Ever since the military takeover of the nation around 25 years ago, public festivals and celebrations have been banned. There are many reasons for this. One is that the government believes a public festival would attract an attack..to further weaken the nation since it will be a large gathering of people in one place. Also, the government is incredibly strict and thinks festivals and celebrations are silly and make a nation look weak. The banning of “religion”/etc also adds to the reasons “why not”. “There is no Arceus. There is no legendary or mythical pokemon” states the government. Even the belief of ghosts and the paranormal is severely looked down upon (even ghost /pokemon/ are banned from the nation). However, this does not stop private/hidden celebrations. There are multiple volcanoes spewed about the area. These volcanoes were thought to house spirit with mystical powers. Thus, for hundreds of years Montisman ancestors held celebrations of fire. They would hold bonfires and do fire dances and make tons and tons of fire-roasted food. Unfortunately, due to no public gatherings, the huge celebrations have been dwindled to secret feasts in private home. There is a saying within the rebels that “you can cage the people, but you cannot cage their spirit”. Note: Celebrations of fire are allowed if it’s just small gatherings and is just like a public feast rather than a religious ceremony.

* Health: Life expectancy: Urban/Suburban: Women – 78; Men – 75 Rural: Women – 56; Men – 52 Overall: Women – 67 ; Men – 64 (due to mining which is a common job for soldiers & civilians alike). Factors: Disease (Parasites, AIDS, etc), Mining incidents/effects (cancers, weak lungs, etc), Alcohol/Drugs, & other minor factors. Known Problems: >> High Cholesterol/Blood Pressure from fatty (meat-filled) diet. (Obesity is strangely low for the diet though due to the amount of exercise involved in daily life – school/military/work/etc) >> Cancer (Lung Cancer is rampant due to the many, many mines) >> HIV/AIDS – Not uncommon in rural areas (and urban areas to some degree) as much as the government tries to quarantine it (people who are infected are put in a special institution… a lot of people who are infected slip by unnoticed (whether it be they keep it on the mum and sneak by or they literally don’t know they are infected and neither does anyone else). >> Parasites (Giardia, worms, etc…) – also not uncommon in rural areas (pretty much nonexistent in urban/suburban areas). >> STDs >> Alcohol abuse (drugs are too expensive for most since the trade of drugs is solely black market). Abortion rate: Low. This practice is frowned up since the population of Montisma is relatively low and the more native born Montismans the better (in the government’s eyes).

*Culture: Literature, Philosophy, & The Arts: The main art in Montisma (that is allowed) is artisan weaponry such as detailed swords, knives, etc… There used to be an abundant of spiritual/religious paintings and artifacts, but a majority of it has been destroyed by the government. The surviving painted art is mostly portraits of random unknown people of the past. Religious leader painting have been destroyed as well…or have been re-labeled as “unknown person” or something of the sort. The philosophy of Montisma has changed greatly over the years. Montisma used to be relatively democratic and justice-filled..even back in feudalism..and Fractis was always a peace-loving nation, but Ason Amar changed everything. He began spreading hate and rage. Now Montisma is a “ticking time bomb” of discontent…though Ason (and his successor Jakub) still think this hate made things better and thinks the smothering government is keeping everything under wraps. In truth, it’s only making this worse. One day the rebels will say they had enough in a much more broad way (right now it’s concentrated riots every now and then). It’s only a matter of time. A civil war is brewin’ indeed. In short, Montisma is not a turn the other cheek nation anymore. If you slap Montisma, they will slap back, and even harder. This testosterone-filled, aggressive, point of view has propaganda being taught in every school, even girls know how to fight rough despite not being able to join the military. Literature: There is no fables..no myths..no fiction anymore. Well, no direct fiction. All that most kids read is a Patriotic (Amar) version of history. The closes thing to fiction, Montisman kids have, is made up war stories…where Amar and his cronies are seen has heroes, o’ course. (However, rebels teach their kids the “real history” and some even tell their kids the myths of either Ignism or Linism or whatever depending on where they’re from.). Media: Just radio and tv (if one’s lucky enough to have a tv) news. The news (as well as the internet) is extremely restricted and censored.

OTHER NOTES: Crime & Law Enforcement: People either feel very safe or very afraid. And it’s not because of the crime. Crimes by Criminals hardly ever happen for crime is harshly punished. It’s the government that’s the issue. The government can cease property/homes whenever they like. This happens often to people who are somehow connected to the Rebellion or even just unlucky SOBs who have no connection to the government at all. The people who get stuff ceased have to pay a fine of varying amounts to get it back (the property/items are usually ceased for very inane/frivolous reasons). The people who feel safe are those who have connections familial or otherwise to the government. >> In Montisma there are 9 types of people - loyal military/gov folks, forced military/gov folks who join in fear/familial reasons/etc/etc, fake military (spies/greedy black market people), civilians who side with government (mostly fearful citizens), civilians who side with the rebels (braver types who are sick of the government. these types give rebels places to hide out and feed them), rebels (who are severely against the government and show no fear), the reluctant/fearful rebels (people are bullied into the rebellion/etc...the rebels can be just as harsh as the gov at times), fake rebels (spies), and, finally, there's the Supreme Committee (NPCs). There is no chance to be indifferent/unbiased..No Switzerland-types exist here. >> The military entices many young pokemon fanatics since choices for pokemons goes far beyond what any citizen can have. They also give their soldiers a life of luxury compared to what citizens have. There's television and internet (abeit censored tv/internet), awesome pools and resort-like things..it's paradise (for the poor., especially). But it comes with a price, a soldier has to fight against the rebels..and when it comes to gov vs rebels - casualties aren't uncommon. >> There are banned types of pokemon (except for certain higher ups in the military and the Committee themselves. Banned types (for civilians for the most part): Ghost, Water, Grass, and Psychic. >> Evolutionary Stones/Items are limited to the committee and way higher ups (if evolutionary items are allowed/exist) There is a black market that shady military folk run/spies.
